The Society was formed in 1778 for a number of purposes, including securing the repeal of the Disarming Act 1746 (achieved in 1782) and the return to the Chiefs of the confiscated lands (achieved 1782).  The society also exists to promote the preservation of the Gaelic language and literature and Highland culture.  It promotes the music of the Highland Bagpipe, and presents the two Gold Medals, at Oban and Inverness each year. It pays pensions to widows of Highland servicemen.  Another object is the improvement of life in the Highlands.  The Society was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1816.  It is a registered charity.
